Attila Szűcs is one of those middle generation Hungarian painters who are acknowledged not only by the profession, but also by art collectors and the wider public. His painting is rendered unequivocally unique at the contemporary art scene by the parallel presence of philosophical meditation and light spectacularity, nostalgia and stinging irony. His multifarious oeuvre is now on show for the first time in the scope of a comprehensive exhibition, hosted by the large, atmospheric spaces of WAX. The oeuvre is installed in thematic blocks emphasising the recurrence, metamorphosis and interplay of the themes. The Collective Memory block evokes the participants and creators of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, the Kádár era and the socialist days. Light and Imagination thematizes his interest in the history of perception and vision. Blind Spot examines the separation of subconscious processes and conscious visual perception. Bubble Memory is a synthesising compilation from the works of the past three years. Partly familiar figures and scenes appear in these “recompressed” pieces, enclosed in circles or ellipses evoking regular spherical forms. The exhibition lets us witness how Szűcs projects the already historical documents of high- and popular culture into one another, as well as emblematic moments and actors of 20th century history and scientific experiments; frequently cited film shots; objects of his personal environment.
