CALL FOR ARTISTS PROJECTS

AVAM (Associated Visual Artists of Madrid) invites proposals for a competition to select four artistic projects for inclusion in Madrid Procesos 09. This competition is part of the activities of CRAC (Coordination of Resources for Contemporary Art), an initiative sponsored by AVAM in order to improve the working conditions for the production and creation of works in the visual arts.

The objectives of Madrid Procesos 09 are:

– To offer the artists collective a platform for the support of coordination and the financing of artists productions.

– To further experimentation and the production process.

– To analyse and draw attention to different models of contemporary artistic production, highlighting the factors which determine its development.

– To respect the rights of the profession and those of the author.

– To help Madrids artists create and disseminate their work, thereby promoting active international cooperation.

To this end, the Madrid Procesos competition has been initiated with the following lines of action:

– A programme of support for the coordination and assessment of the production of artistic projects.

– A mobility programme: aid for artistic production and its international dissemination in collaboration with the Karl Hofer Society of Berlin.

– A dissemination programme: drawing attention to research, using resources and implementing the projects selected for Madrid Procesos through their dissemination in the media and publishing a digital catalogue.

GUIDELINES:

The aim of this competition is to select four artistic projects to be undertaken during Madrid Procesos 09 in the following manner:

a) Two artistic projects will be produced principally with existing resources in the Madrid Region during a period of approximately five months (June-October 2009).

b) Two artistic projects will be produced in Berlin during an exact period of two months (September-October 2009).

1. Specific Rules of Madrid Procesos 09/Madrid

1.1. Participants:

Artists of any nationality may participate, regardless of age. In the case of a group project, the collective must designate one member to represent them.

1.2. Projects:

Participants must present an original and unpublished project (It may currently be in some phase of production) to be partially, or totally completed during the duration of the grant.

There is no incompatibility with other support for the same project, but this must be specified (when it exists) in the documentation that is presented.

The production of the project must be realized primarily using resources available within the Community of Madrid, the various stages of its development to be visible during the entire duration of Madrid Procesos 09 (see condition number 1.10).

1.3. Amount of grant:

The maximum amount designated for support is 9.000 € (TAX Base + VAT) and to be divided into the following parts:

6,000 € for the production of the project. This amount will include: materials, travel, housing, insurance and any other expenses related to the production of the project.

3,000 € for an honorarium to cover the making of the work and the author\’s rights. This allocation cannot be renounced.

According to the current tax legislation, invoices of expenses must contain the corresponding withholding tax and all the particulars required on a normal VAT invoice.

1.4. Selection of the projects:

At least 50% of the artists selected must either have been born in Madrid or be residents in the Community of Madrid during the year 2009.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate and compare the proposals and select the projects:

· General interest and quality of the project.

· Viability of the project based on review of the dossier and the supporting documentation including: timelines, requirements for the completion of the project and the economic needs.

· The author(s) formative and professional history.

· Value will be placed on the use of a process of investigation during production.

The commission responsible for the selection of projects will establish the criteria for assigning points to each category as stated above. Two artistic projects will be selected for Madrid Procesos 09. In the case that the submitted projects do not meet the established criteria, the commission in charge of selection may declare the competition void, in part or in its totality.

1.5. Sending projects:

Artists interested in participating in this competition should send their proposal to:

A copy of all required material will be sent to:

1.6. Documentation required (by e-mail and post):

a) Application form, including the following personal details: Name, Surname, Date of Birth, ID/Passport, Nationality, Address, City, Province, Post Code, Phone, e-mail, specifying which category is being requested (Madrid Procesos/Madrid).

b) Dossier of the project to be realized including:

– Title and summary of the project (a maximum of 100 words).

– Development of the project to be realized (a maximum of 1,000 words).

– Chronological development of the project. (The time frame for preparation and realization of the project is five months).

– Sketches and images of the project (a maximum of six) in jpg format with a resolution of 72 ppp.

– Current status of the project (in the case where the process of production has already begun).

– Technical requirements.

– Technical data guaranteeing the viability of the project.

– List of any other requirements.

– Detailed budget, including expenses that will be paid by personal/other means.

c) Author or Group Dossier:

– Photocopy of DNI (national identity card) or passport for all authors of the project.

– Curriculum vitae (a maximum of 1.000 words).

– Residents of the Community of Madrid should present documentation to accredit their residency.

– Short dossier containing information about previous works. All projects cited should contain complete technical information (originals will not be accepted, nor documents such as catalogues, brochures, original works of art, etc.)

For reasons of organization and judging, this material must be presented in the following way: Din A4, bound and having a maximum length of 10 pages. Any proposal that does not meet these requirements will be rejected. In the case of audiovisual projects, the artist may include a DVD to accompany the required dossier. An appropriate envelope addressed and with adequate postage, must be included for return of projects that are not accepted.

1.7. Timeline:

The documentation must be submitted by May 16, 2009. For material sent by postal service, the date to be considered will be that registered in the postal office at the time of mailing. The dossiers and the accompanying documentation of the selected projects will become property of AVAM CRAC.

Correction of defects in the applications:

In the case where applications lack the necessary information in any of the areas required, AVAM CRAC will notify the participants giving them seven working days to complete the missing data and should these not be received in the allotted time the petition will be considered withdrawn. Any submission that does not present detailed documentation for section 1.6. will be rejected.

1.9. Realization:

Once the selection of projects has been determined, the technical team of AVAM CRAC will be in charge of providing support in the tasks of coordination such as evaluation, supervision and overseeing of the development of the projects.

1.10. Dissemination of the projects:

AVAM CRAC commits itself to the promotion and dissemination of the processes of working and the results of said projects (in mutual agreement with the author(s) in a manner that they consider most opportune for the best dissemination of the projects. In order to do this, the artists will facilitate all information and documentation necessary for the correct communication of the projects.

The authors of the selected projects commit to authorize the reproduction and distribution of all material generated for the projects, and in all the activities that are created for the diffusion of Madrid Procesos 09. All documentation generated will become part of the archives of AVAM CRAC. Artists will transfer the reproduction and public communication rights for one year starting from the decision date. These rights will be transferred nationally and internationally. The projects and the selected works will remain the property of the authors and the relinquishing of rights in no case will be incompatible with the authors’ simultaneous use of them through-out the execution of the project.

AVAM will sign a contract with the designated authors of the selected projects where both the obligations and relinquishing of rights stated in the guidelines will be specified.

1.11. Obligations on the part of the recipients:

The persons or collectives selected in this competition commit to:

a) Acceptance of the decision by the selection commission.

b) To develop their project within the stipulated time frame and under the specified conditions; where this is not possible the grant may be withdrawn automatically based upon a report presented by the AVAM CRAC technical team, and in said case, the funds must be returned.

c) The slogan \”Madrid Procesos 09\” and the logos of AVAM CRAC and those of the Council of Culture, Sport and Tourism of the Community of Madrid will be included with all material developed for the project and that is made public, whether it be in AVAM CRAC or in a public space, or in any future exhibition of the project.

d) In the case that Madrid Procesos 09 has patrons or collaborators, their logo will also appear in all publicity that is realized for the selected projects.

e) The selected participants must confirm their acceptance in writing within ten days. Those who exceed this length of time may be disqualified. On confirmation, they shall then sign a contract establishing the specific clauses which enable the project to be implemented.

f) Notify in writing any modification in the project presented.

g) Demonstrate their rights to the intellectual property of the project and guarantee that the project is original and unpublished.

h) Upon termination of the program, it will be necessary to accredit and justify all expenses for the development of the project by documentation of the work realized, including bills and original receipts that will be returned.

2. 2. Specific Rules of Madrid Procesos 09/Berlin

2.1. Participants:

Projects may be submitted individually by artists of any nationality or age who reside in the Madrid Region, can demonstrate over seven years\’ professional experience and would like to temporarily set up base in Berlin.

2.2. Projects:

Participants must present an original and unpublished project (It may currently be in some phase of production) to be partially, or totally completed during the duration of the grant.

There is no incompatibility with other support for the same project, but this must be specified (when it exists) in the documentation that is presented.

2.3. Undertaking projects:

Projects will be undertaken at the Artists\’ Studios of the Karl Hofer Society in Oberschoeneweide, Berlin over a two-month period: FROM SEPTEMBER 1st TO OCTOBER 31st INCLUSIVE.

The artists selected may participate in the events and activities undertaken by the Karl Hofer Society and may maintain a direct connection with the University of Berlin, Udk.

The different stages of this process will become evident during the Madrid Procesos 09 programme (see point 2.10).

2.4. Financial assistance:

Financial assistance which will be issued to the projects selected are:

– Plane tickets and medical insurance.

– Accommodation and studio in Berlin, at the Artists\’ Studios of the Karl Hofer Society (Atelieretage Obersschöneweide. Wilhelminenhofstraße 83-85; Haus 59/3.Stock. 12459 Berlin).

– 2,000 € for plane tickets, medical insurance, local journeys, keep and acquisition of materials.

– 1,300 € for an honorarium to cover the making of the work and the author\’s rights. This allocation cannot be renounced.

– The tutelage of an internationally recognised visual artist, resident in Berlin, and appointed by AVAM CRAC.

– Exhibition of work at the gallery of the Karl Hofer Society in Oberschoeneweide, from 24 to 29 October, 2009.

2.5. Selection of the projects:

It is essential for the participating artists to have been born in Madrid or to be residents of the Madrid Region during 2009 and to be able to demonstrate at least seven years\’ experience as a professional artist.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate and compare the proposals and select the projects:

h) Respect the installations of the studio, the accommodation and the show room. The participant will pay the corresponding deposit, to be returned once the residence period is over and the installations have been checked.

3. Double applications

Those artists who comply with the requisites of both categories may make a double application. To do so, they should send different dossiers of the project (one for each category) and a single creator\’s dossier together with an application form, including all the documentation detailed in points 1.6 and 2.7. This documentation should be submitted in foolscap or A4, bound separately and occupying a maximum of 30 sheets in total.

In all cases, applicants may only receive one grant.

4. Commission for the selection of projects:

With the goal of guaranteeing transparency in all phases of the project, AVAM will designate an external commission that will be in charge of selecting the projects to be developed during Madrid Procesos 09.

The selection committee (designated by AVAM) will be composed of three recognized experts in the fields of the plastic and visual arts, plus the presence one member of the technical team of AVAM who will have voice but no vote, and act as secretary.

The committee\’s decision will be unappealable. It will be made public at the end of May 2009. Each candidate will be notified personally and the results will be published on the AVAM website.

5. Interpretation and acceptance of the conditions:

Any doubt that may arise about the interpretation of the requirements will be resolved by AVAM.

Participation in this competition presupposes full acceptance of the norms that govern it. Non-fulfillment of any of the obligations established in the guidelines or in the awarding of the grant will result in the immediate suspension of the same, independently of the responsibilities that it may produce.
