The SACATAR FOUNDATION / BRAZIL operates a residency program for artists at the Quinta Pitanga estate on the Island of Itaparica in the Bay of All Saints, across from the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Salvador, founded over four hundred and fifty years ago, was the first capital of Brazil and encompasses the largest concentration of Portuguese Renaissance and Baroque architecture in Latin America. With a unique local cuisine inspired by Africa, a diverse musical heritage that continues to evolve to international acclaim and miles of beautiful beaches, Salvador has become a popular tourist destination.
The Quinta Pitanga was built in 1950 as the spiritual retreat of a Catholic girls school. It later operated as a luxury hotel. Located near the historic village of Itaparica, it now serves as a residence for up to five artists. Sorrounded by three acres of coconuts, tropical fruit trees and countless pitanga berry bushes, the estate faces five hundred feet of secluded beach.
The program provides international transportation, lodging, board and workspace for qualifying artists for periods of six weeks to three months at the Quinta Pitanga. Artists can work on their own, but the foundation also provides support for artists to work with local and regional groups or organizations on specific projects. We strive for a mix of Brazilian and international artists at all times. Visual and literary artists may currently apply, and we expect soon to accomodate artists of other disciplines. Selection is based solely on talent.
The Sacatar Foundation plans to host approximately fifteen Fellows between September 2002 and February 2003. A maximum of five artists will be in residence at any one time.
