COURSE
Who the Course is intended for
The Advanced Course in Visual Arts offers young artists of all nationalities the possibility of working alongside internationally famous artists, as well as having contact with other students of different cultures.
Applicants must have a minimum age of 18 and preferably be enrolled in the final years of a fine art course at a university, art institute or academy.
The course is free and open to a restricted number of participants, selected by a scientific committee.
Stay expenses and material costs are not covered.
The Course structure
Classes take place every day, from Mondays to Saturdays, with theoretical seminars together with curators and invited lecturers and a workshop with Richard Nonas. Attendance is compulsory.
Documentation required
Application forms must be filled and sent before May 24 (postal date), together with a documentation of realized works (preferably slides, laser copies, CD, etc.). Selected applicants will be informed by June 10.
Documentation will not be sent back later.
VISITING PROFESSOR
Richard Nonas
Richard Nonas was born in New York in 1936. Originally an anthropologist, Nonas
has been working as an artist since the early 1970s, also taking part in the group Anarchitecture founded with Gordon Matta-Clark.
His sculpture, small and very large, indoors and out, deals with the hidden emotional power of very simple objects and the charged places that they create.
He has built and exhibited his works all over the world, many of which are included in the collections of numerous museums and other public institutions.
He has also written extensively about the meanings, and mysteries, of art.
EXHIBITIONS
End-of-Course Exhibition
The exhibition presents the artworks realized by the students during the course, and reflects the specific working project developed with Richard Nonas; moreover, it represents a chance of exchange and confrontation between different backgrounds and approaches. A further student’s exhibition will take place in a non-profit space in Milan, in collaboration with the Care/of Viafarini archive.

During the course Richard Nonas will realize a project expressly conceived for Como. Collaboration of the students to its preparation is an integral part of the course.

A curator and art critic, he extensively worked on non-Western art. Director of Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf, he works as artistic advisor for Museu del Presente in Milan. His exhibitions include: Magiciens de la terre (1989), Lyon Bienial (2000), Chen Zhen (2003)
Sylvere Lotringer, July 19, 11 a.m.
General Editor of Semiotext(e), he teaches at Columbia University in New York. He was instrumental in introducing French theory to the United States. His most recent publications include: French Theory in America (Routledge, 2001), Hatred of Capitalism (Semioext(e)/The MIT Press, 2002).
CATALOGUE
The Advanced Course in Visual Arts Publications is a series of bilingual catalogues documenting the activities organized during the course.
