2005 DIGITAL ART PRIZE

Competition Announcement

1. Subject
The Italian Ministry of Culture, Department for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, DARC – General Directorate for Contemporary Architecture and Art, MAXXI – National Museum for 21st Century Arts, in collaboration with the Fondazione Rosselli announce the 2005 Prize for Digital Art. The competition will award a prize of € 5,000 (five thousand euros) gross to the work (published or unpublished) or project that is judged to be the best.

2. Theme of the competition
The theme of the first edition of the Prize for Digital Art is Net Art. The competition is dedicated to artists who use Internet as an instrument of creative expression. The prize-winning work or project will be presented on the websites of MAXXI, the Fondazione Rosselli and other partners participating in the Prize, chosen at the discretion of MAXXI and the Fondazione Rosselli, who will support the initiative, as well as in compliance with the modalities set out in point 9 below.

3. Conditions of participation
The competition is open to all Italian and foreign artists born after 1 January 1970.

4. Exclusions
The following persons will not be eligible to take part in the competition:
– members of the selection Jury, members of the organising Secretariat, their spouses and relatives up to and including the sixth degree of consanguinity;
– employees and collaborators of members of the Jury and the promoting Organisation;
– those who have helped to prepare the announcement and the attached documents;
– those who are employed by public Organisations, Institutions or Administrations, unless they have specific permission given by the Administration for which they work.

5. Stages and deadlines
1st Stage: Submit application form: by 31 October 2005 (by post); by 8 November 2005, 4.00 p.m. (delivered by hand)
The application form, complete with the requested documentation (see point 6 below), must be sent in a sealed envelope to the following address:

The receipt of the material will be documented by the signature of the recipient, and the date and time; the postmark will taken as proof of posting.
The opening times for hand delivery to the above address are: 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., from Tuesday to Friday.
Late dispatch or delivery, for whatever reason, will result in exclusion from the competition.
2nd Stage: Announcement of the winning project or work: by 31 December 2005

The announcement will be made on the following websites (application form is downloadable there as well):

3rd Stage: Delivery of the completed work: by 28 February 2006
The winner must deliver the work to the Prize Secretariat (see point 8 below) before the aforesaid date. If a project is selected, the winner must produce and deliver the work, as described in the project presented for the competition, before this date. The Administration reserves the right to amend the delivery date subject to notice, should this become necessary for organisational requirements.
The late delivery of the work or any discrepancy in the work compared to the selected project, for whatever reason, will lead to the withdrawal of the prize.

4th Stage: Presentation of the works: by 31 March 2006
By the aforesaid date, the Italian Ministry of Culture, Department for Cultural and Environmental Heritage, DARC – General Directorate for Contemporary Architecture and Art, MAXXI – National Museum for 21st Century Arts and the Fondazione Rosselli undertake to present the winning work on their respective websites and in any physical spaces, using the channels and methods they consider most appropriate.
The Administration reserves the right to amend the deadlines indicated in Stages 3 – 4 – 5 subject to notice, should this become necessary for the organisational requirements of this competition.

6. Documentation required to take part in the competition
Candidates must send the following in a single envelope:
– a printed document containing a filled-in copy of the “application form” (download the model application form in RTF format);
– a printed document containing a “curriculum vitae”, complete with autograph signature and consent to process personal details in accordance with Law 675/96; above all, the CV should highlight activities over the past five years. The CV should also give date of birth, address, telephone and e-mail contact details for the competitor;
– a printed document containing a “description of the work or project”, specifying the technical procedures for its realisation and the technical requirements for use;
– CD-Rom containing: documents on the above as files using “Microsoft Office Word” version 2003 or earlier, and any images to accompany the project and work as Jpeg RGB or Tiff RGB files, with a resolution of 300 dpi.
– a photocopy of an ID document.
The printed documentation must not exceed a total length of 4 pages of 2,500 keystrokes each.
Unsolicited material will not be examined (e.g. catalogues, leaflets and other printed materials, photocolour, slides or photos).
The documentation received will not be returned and will be included in the Documentation Archive of MAXXI.

7. Selection Jury
The Jury, which will not meet publicly, will select a winning work or project from the works and projects presented in the competition. When assessing the candidates, the Jury will take into consideration the artistic value of the project or the work, as well as the artistic qualities of the competitor as judged from his or her past experience.
