The Lucy Art Residency is happy to announce an open call for its first short residency program and commission for visual artists.
The programme offers the opportunity for an EU/EEA based artist whose main practice is photography focused to spend two weeks in June 2017 in Kavala, Greece. It is free to apply and the selected artist will have the opportunity to live and work in the coastal city in the north of Greece with transportation, accommodation and subsistence covered.
What does the residency offer? .
The selected artist will be offered free accommodation in the five star Lucy Hotel in Kavala. In addition to that the artist\’s return trip from an EU/EEA country of residence is covered, as well as three meals a day at the hotel premises. Furthermore a per diem and an artist fee for the production of one artwork will be provided. Opportunities to meet with local art organisations will be encouraged.
what is expected from the artist and the goal of the residency.
The goal of this residency is to give the artist two weeks of free time to explore Kavala and the regions around the city. During the residency the artist will be asked to do a public talk in a cultural centre in the city. Furthermore the artist will be commissioned to produce one new artwork that will be part of the archive of the residency, accessible to the visitors of the hotel as well as the future residents.
Application to the Lucy Art Residency program is open to all visual artists working with the medium of photography irrespective of age or education background. Due to logistical restrictions, currently we can only accept applications from artists resident in an EU/EEA country.

A portfolio section with a maximum length of 15 pages. There is no minimum or maximum number of images. Captions and short descriptions should be included.

Selection process
A short list of artists will be selected and their portfolios will be forwarded to the artistic committee consisting of the founder of the residency, Maria Mitzali, the advisory board and three jurors from the fields of visual arts. The selected artist will be notified within two weeks of the applications deadline.
The Jury
Sara Dolfi Agostini is a curator and a writer specialized in contemporary art and photography. She is an advisory member of the photography board of Triennale Museum in Milan (2017) and from 2014 to 2016 she was the co-curator of the public art project ArtLine Milano. She is a contributor of Sole 24 Ore (from 2008) and Klat Magazine (from 2013), co-writer of Collezionare Fotografia (Contrasto, 2010/14) and has published texts for Skira, Rorhof, Yard Press and Danilo Montanari Editore. Besides writing and curating, she is professor of contemporary photography at the Fondazione Fotografia Modena (2016), IAAD in Turin (2017).
Kim Knoppers is an art historian and a curator at Foam, photography museum in Amsterdam. In this role she has worked on several exhibitions together with emerging artists including Raphaël Dallaporta, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, Anne de Vries, Jan Hoek, Lorenzo Vitturi, Jan Rosseel and Melanie Bonajo. She also curated group exhibitions and exhibitions of established photographers like Re-Search, Collaborate: On Artists’Collectives, Bertien van Manen, Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin and Geert Goiris. She is interested in a wide range of photography: from documentary photography to artists working with documentary strategies, and from archival material to photography as a research tool. She is also interested in artists’collectives and DIY strategies. Kim writes on a regular base for Foam Magazine and Unseen Magazine.
Shoair Mavlian is a curator at Tate Modern, London, focusing primarily on photography. Shoair researches acquisitions for the international collection whilst curating exhibitions and displays across Tate Modern. She curated the major exhibition The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection (Tate Modern, 2016), Conflict, Time, Photography (Tate Modern, 2014) and the collaborative exhibition Project Space: A Chronicle of Interventions (Tate Modern and TEOR/éTica, Costa Rica, 2014). Shoair has a background in fine art photography practice and the history of photography focusing on the twentieth century. She has a strong interest in photography relating to conflict and memory, Central and Latin American photography and emerging contemporary practice.

What is included in the residency?
The residency includes accommodation in a private room in the five star hotel Lucy, breakfast and two daily meals in the hotel\’s restaurant, economy flights to and from the country of residence, a 500 Euro artist fee and a per diem of 20 Euros for personal expenses.
What is not included in the residency?
Personal, health and equipment insurance must be arranged by the artist in advance. Please make sure that your insurance policy covers you in all kinds of emergency as the Residency is not able to provide comprehensive health coverage of any kind.
What disciplines are accepted in the residency?
Currently we accept applications from visual artists that use photography extensively in their practice.
Who can apply for the residency?
The residency is open to emerging visual artists resident in an EU/EEA country. These include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden Switzerland and the UK.
Our aim is to expand the list of countries in the next editions of the residency to also include countries outside the EU/EEA.
