Opening remarks by Ádám Schönberger cultural community organizer
Besides numerous negative examples, the 20th century also provided good ones to follow. In both aspects, these things should be considered as cornerstones for society as a whole, which cannot be forgotten. Art plays a prominent role in building collective memories and preventing events to fade into oblivion, since they tell us about an era, a society and a life situation without specific memory definition, and by doing so, it can be seen as a supplement of all genres in music, literature and fine arts, as well as an extension of what is written in history books and as a tool for creating an appropriate atmosphere.
A project based on Spanish and French initiative titled Negras & Rojas (Noires et Rouges) makes an attempt to extend memories, which puts the struggles of the war in ’30’s Spain and the international solidarities in connection to that to a contemporary perspective, emphasizing those elements of the events, which resulted in partnership of the civil society.
The exhibition titled Fekete és vörös is the Hungarian stop of this international project, which seeks answers to the questions of what civil partnership arching through nations, solidarity and voluntary commitment mean in our present, moreover, of what socially relevant answers fine arts can give to the problems of history (e.g. the rise of extremist ideologies, social and economic crises), in case it considers reacting its task at all.
The starting point of the project, i.e. emphasizing the significant role of social cooperation, is even more relevant in relation to the current global events. A reflection on the war in Ukraine is therefore inevitable. However, due to the proximity of the events, the exhibition does not wish to directly react to the state of war. It creates the right parallel and context only symbolically, through historical coincidences.
The venue of the exhibition in Budapest is a space arranged in the cellar system of AQB, which can be seen as an emblematic reference to the various alternative movements outside the system.
