Idea, direction and editing: Miklós Peternák
Conversations with: Richard Kriesche, Geert Lovink, Peter Weibel, Jean-Paul Fargier, Vilém Flusser
Interviews conducted by: László Beke, Geert Lovink, Miklós Peternák
The video essay Mediology was created in 1990 during the international symposium The Media Are With Us, held at the Kunsthalle (Műcsarnok) in Budapest. The symposium brought together leading media theorists and artists of the period to reflect on the media-historical significance of the Romanian “television” revolution. Mediology features five participants of the symposium – Richard Kriesche, Geert Lovink, Peter Weibel, Jean-Paul Fargier and Vilém Flusser – interviewed by László Beke, Geert Lovink and Miklós Peternák. Their conversations explore questions of media, digital technology and cultural transmission in the early era of image production, electronic communication and media art. The title refers to the concept of “mediology” associated with the French philosopher Régis Debray, who used the term to describe an interdisciplinary method for examining the transmission of cultural meanings within society, understanding technology and media not merely as technical tools but as formative forces of cultural thought and action. At the same time, the creators of the video refer to Nam June Paik through the title. Screened publicly for the first time, Mediology is both a historical document and a rare archival imprint of a defining moment in the international discourse of media theory and media art – one that continues to raise timely questions about the relationship between technology, the image and cultural memory.
Final digital version and English subtitles by: Flóra Barkóczi, Miklós Peternák, Zsigmond Peternák, 2026.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with Geert Lovink and Miklós Peternák, moderated by Flóra Barkóczi. The video and the conversation will be held in English.
