The Alberto Vilar Global Fellows in the Performing Arts have been established by philanthropist Alberto Vilar at New York University to identify and support promising students of exceptional talent in the performing arts from around the world for a special two year program of graduate education, training, and support. As one of the largest private universities in the nation, New York University has earned a prominent position in the world of the performing arts. The University faculty, including musicians, writers, playwrights, filmmakers, dancers, choreographers, composers, directors, and designers in the vanguard of their respective disciplines, are deeply committed to training the next generation of artists. NYU\’s location in the heart of New York City, the foremost center for the arts in the United States, ensures that the Vilar Global Fellows will be able to balance their study with significant involvement in the rich cultural life of New York City.

The Alberto Vilar Global Fellows in the Performing Arts Endowment at NYU will provide an annual stipend to each Vilar Global Fellow. The current $40,000 stipend, including $25,000 for tuition or private study, $10,000 for room and board, and $5,000 for travel, will be adjusted as required for inflation or other factors.

Programs of Study
The Vilar Global Fellows in the Performing Arts will be drawn from the following initial offerings, though each category may not be represented among each year\’s Fellows:

  • Musical Composition

At New York University, the Vilar Global Fellows will participate in a rigorous curriculum of studies in their chosen discipline in the Tisch School of the Arts, The Steinhardt School of Education, or the Graduate School of Arts and Science, leading to a Master of Arts, Master of Music, or Master of Fine Arts degree or an Advanced Certificate. The Fellows will receive regular and intensive private instruction and will attend courses taught by the University\’s distinguished artist/scholars.

The Vilar Global Fellows will also have opportunities to work closely with distinguished performing artists in, and artistic leaders of, outstanding New York City cultural institutions related to their fields of interest. Through programmatic linkage with these institutions, which will be coordinated and facilitated by the University, the Vilar Global Fellows will have unparalleled opportunities to study with and learn from some of the most gifted performing artists in the world, as well as become more deeply familiar with the institutions in which these artists perform.
