Skaftfell Residency Program

The aim of the residency program at Skaftfell is manifold: to create and nurture an environment for inspiration; to encourage artists to experience life and work in a unique micro community where creativity is applied to the everyday; to foster a sense of community between artists and the public in the rural setting of East-Iceland; to facilitate circumstances for artists to experience, reflect and explore new means of their practice and to provide conditions that stimulate the dialogue between art and life. The program is aimed at professional visual artists but those working across fields or with in an interdisciplinary practice are eligible to apply regardless of the nature of their primary profession or arts education. The duration of the Standard Residency period is from 1 – 6 months, but applications for a residency period of more than 1 month are given preference. Skaftfell also offers a short term Research Residency option. The program is self-directed with the possibility of support from the staff at Skaftfell, who can assist participants in pursuing and realizing artistic research and practice. Artists are welcome to participate in the Skaftfell educational program, including artist talks, presentations or workshops for the local community, or the Skaftfell Art Class, which provides an educational opportunity for children from the neighborhood primary school. 20140605 res selection compos 500×235 Residency program Criteria and application process Skaftfell uses the following criteria when evaluating applicants: Primarily the quality of the applicants work as indicated by submitted visual documentation. Exhibition record and curriculum vitae. Demonstration of a serious and consistent dedication to the professional practice of visual arts through submitted documents. Evidence that the applicant is at a critical juncture in their development as an artists that will be advanced by the residency stay. Artists are selected by a panel of individuals active in the field of visual arts and culture, with panel members varying from year to year. The selection of artists is based on artistic quality and innovation as well as the ability to work productively within the program.
