The premise governing this joint exhibition is to illustrate how two artists – working within the very same genre – can evoke an entirely disparate set of responses in the viewer. In the given case, the works on display are those of two sculptors working within the ‘art brut’ style. Although there are great similarities in their means of expression, the sought-for cathartic effect, the use of collage in layout, and the overall ephemeral nature of the material being employed, the respective works of each artist have an utterly dissimilar effect. The exhibition demonstrates the inherently contrasting qualities in works that otherwise share a similar approach and sensibility.
