Initiated by, and realized in the cooperation of, Anton Vidokle (visual artist and curator of Manifesta 6) and Julieta Aranda, the e-flux video rental is an international project which has been touring contemporary art institutions for over a year now. Including a projection room, as well as a film and video archive, the presentation seeks to introduce a vast array of international video art, collected in the most impressive attempt of recent years to chart trends of motion picture in contemporary art.
The selection process is anything but traditional, as the curators seek to involve professionals and artists who are most familiar with their local scenes, the artists active there.
At present the archive contains more than 600 films and videos, a part of which the audience can freely borrow during the exhibition – as suggested by the title.
The EVR started its journey at the end of 2004, after the principles of the archive were laid down during a workshop in the Lower East Side, New York. Since then, it has been presented at Portikus, a contemporary arts gallery in Frankfurt, as well as in Berlin, Amsterdam, Miami and a number of other cities.
