Kati Vilim’s painting is connected to the tradition of abstraction, and her work is strongly influenced by the American abstract painting tradition, especially the New York School’s efforts to expand the medial boundaries of painting, to seek pure form and the direct expressiveness of matter. According to one of the most prominent theorists of the movement, Clement Greenberg, modernist painting is primarily concerned with the conditions of its own medium.

This reflexive approach to painting, which explores the limits of its own medium, can also be observed in the works of Kati Vilim, where painting does not merely convey pictorial content, but also explores its own qualities and sensory mechanisms of action.
