In addition to the main works of Sándor Makoldi’s last period, the exhibition also includes the Hungarian folk art objects from his collection that inspired them (i.e. the imprint of the past, the folk roots) and, as a sign, the like-minded sculptural sculptures and textile paintings of his two children (sculptor Sándor Makoldi Gyula and painter-restorer Gizella Makoldi) – in other words, the future.

Sándor Makoldi believed that in Hungary, the typically Hungarian art of painting (visual culture) could also make its way, as a continuation of our traditional folk-national culture (as already manifested in the acclaimed Bardak, Kodály music, or the revival of folk music and folk dance.)

Sándor Makoldi’s contemporary painting was inspired by the ‘abstract’ conceptual symbols of folk art, which he found in the ethnographic objects he collected and analysed. In addition to the psychology of creation, he was fascinated by the understanding of how to organise the world view, and he himself continued to express what he wanted to say in his paintings – taking advantage of the technical benefits of ‘high art’.
