Anett Hámori’s works and choice of subjects straddle the boundary between individual memory and collective experience. Her watercolors on large rolls of paper are a delicate, sensitive medium for conveying questions about how we process the past. Her early works drew on elements from her immediate environment, but for more than a decade now, her art has focused on political and war events taken from the mass media news cycle. Her figures, appearing against a sterile white background, evoke a kind of continuous series of images, a memory-like imprint, and yet they become personal — for these images have become part of our everyday visual experience.

Her latest exhibition is inspired by images of current war conflicts, while also engaging in a dialogue with her own childhood memories — with a particular emphasis on the experience of encountering visual representations of war for the first time. In this work, subjective, personal layers merge with objective images of historical and social events.

Hámori’s visual language speaks subtly yet decisively about the processing of collective and individual trauma. The fragility and aesthetics of the paper medium reinforce both the gravity of the themes and the intimate connection with the viewer.
