István Haász (born 1946 in Gönc) is an internationally renowned visual artist and a leading figure and pioneer of geometric art. He graduated from the Eger Teacher Training College in 1968 and from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1979. He taught at the Mihály Fazekas Practice High School in Budapest, and from 1988 to 2008 at the Hungarian College of Applied Arts (now the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design). In 1994, he was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary; in 2002, he received the Mihály Munkácsy Prize; and in 2010, he was honored with the title of Meritorious Artist. His works are held in major domestic and international collections. He is a leading member of the Open Structures Art Association and a regular participant in exhibitions held at the Vasarely Museum.
His work in painting and graphic art is characterized by a minimalist approach and a consistent exploration of the interactions between geometric forms, planes, and spaces. His paintings transcend the two-dimensional plane: in addition to fundamental questions of material and space, movement and light also become defining elements of his works. The interplay of geometric forms and planes gives rise to unique spatial structures, transforming the painting into an object.
Space also appears in a fractal-like manner in Haász’s oeuvre: the architecture of the object, built from layered planes, is further extended onto the object’s surfaces. PRAE-POST presents the various periods of this consistently developed body of work—selected from pieces created over the five decades between 1975 and 2025—ranging from paintings and graphic works to objects that extend into space.
