András Szunyoghy, a graphic artist, has become one of the most distinctive and respected figures of Hungarian and international visual culture. His career has grown out of the classical fine art tradition, but his oeuvre goes far beyond it: his art is situated at the intersection of past and present, science and art, autonomous and applied graphics, craft and thought. His work bridges past and present, art and science, technical craftsmanship and vision, applied and autonomous art.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of Szunyoghy’s multi-faceted career, showcasing his proficiency in copper and linocut techniques, his works based on anatomical representations of the human and animal body, and the teaching aids and drawings that are an integral part of his teaching and publishing activities.
Szunyoghy is internationally known for his books on anatomy, which have provided a basis for generations to learn drawing observation and anatomical vision. His works have been translated into more than 20 languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Romanian and Lithuanian, in addition to the major world languages, and are still used today in languages from Mexico to Japan, Canada to China.
Through the complementary fields and tools of reproduction graphics, anatomical representation, drawing pedagogy and educational theory, some of the basic features of a consistent and rich life path are outlined. The works, objects and books on display reveal not only layers of technical knowledge and visual thinking, but also a particular constancy of vision.
The oeuvre, while coherent and thoughtful, is by no means complete. András Szunyoghy is still actively working on new books and designs, with the same rigorous attention and discipline that is evident in all the material on display.
