The exhibition offers an insight into an unusual trend in Bulgaria, with works by twelve Bulgarian artists born between 1933 and 1989. Bulgaria is one of the few European countries without an established tradition of geometric art. The nonsofia association aims to change this by organising exhibitions, symposia, public lectures, film screenings and workshops for children since 2010. Through these activities, nonsofia aims to consolidate the local art community and promote the international recognition of Bulgarian geometric abstraction.
In 2018, new opportunities opened up for the group. The first export: bulgaria exhibition was organised at the Institut für Konstruktive Kunst und Konkrete Poesie (IKKP) – Kunsthaus Rehau at the invitation of Eugen Gomringer, a renowned representative of concrete poetry. In the same year, a dialogue was initiated with the president of the Open Structures Art Association (OSAS), Dóra Maurer, on the presentation of Bulgarian geometric art. The result was this exhibition at the Vasarely Museum, which owes much to the close friendship between the two associations. The relationship between OSAS and nonsofia dates back to the exhibition orthogonal12: international forum for constructive art in Sofia in 2012.
The exhibition includes paintings, prints and reliefs.
