Most people still know Margit Szilvitzky (1931-2018) as a pioneer of Hungarian experimental textile art, but her painting, an important part of her oeuvre, has been less in the spotlight in recent decades. After Szilvitzky’s retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle in 1988, she concluded her creative period, which was linked to the medium of textiles extended into space, and after that she dealt programmatically with aspects of interest to painting.

The exhibition Box Pictures at acb Attachment 2022 already tried to bring back a more complex picture of Margit Szilvitzky’s art into the public consciousness, since the artist’s problematizations were not bound to a single genre, but rather moved between and bridged media.

The exhibition at the acb Gallery now seeks to approach and present Margit Szilvitzky’s painting in a comprehensive way, including her moulded canvases from the late 1980s and early 1990s, and her folding from the mid-1990s, and her canvases painted in the second half of the 2000s, which approach the problems of mapping that have preoccupied the artist throughout her career with the planar tools of geometric abstraction.
