We usually speak of borders in the most generic way, as a geopolitical element of space, which divides the world to states, areas organised under flags. However, more generally, we have other concepts, such as a symbolic one; a very fickle societal border outlining our relations both interpersonal and intercommunital. The symbolic border defines the abstract subdivision of reality, how we distinguish between groups of objects, people or concepts.
The complexity of administrative lines between Eastern European countries was influenced heavily by layers of time, decades before the end of Communism and the last thirty years both. A good illustration could be the abandoned border posts, rendered obsolete by the Schengen treaty.
The objective of the exhibition titled Fictive Lines is to show the versatility and the complexity of the topic through art.
