The series shows the lives of Gábor and Kálmán, two middle-aged men living in Drégelypalánk, Nógrád County, their close relationship, their love and attraction for each other. Kálmán came into closer contact with Gábor in 2016, and shortly afterwards he moved into Gábor’s shelter, where they have lived together for the past six years with little or no interruption. Although their shelter is located in the Roma settlement, the community is not very accepting of them and their relationship with each other is not accepted by the majority. Kalman died of a heart attack on 4 January 2022. Since then, Gábor has been spending his days alone again.
Gábor and Kálmán, stigmatised as they were in their own village, their story and their person come closer to us thanks to the photographer’s intervention. Noémi Melegh’s Napsugár makes the two middle-aged men the protagonists without making value judgements about them or idealising them. She does not want to hide behind a “syrupy”, sentimental title what is in front of the camera. If she did, she wouldn’t be a real photojournalist. And she is very much one.
