The Budapest City Gallery has no permanent exhibition – and if it ever did, it would be an ever-changing, ever-renewing one. Our exhibition, born out of a desire to showcase our collection, is part of a shift in thinking about museums. A small part of the material has already been included in our previous collective exhibitions, a larger part is a new selection, in which the issues of war and peace, identities assumed and forced, and the daily discourses around the dynamics of enemy formation are clearly highlighted. Entering a series of intricate, gradually opening spaces, visitors will encounter works from diverse periods, trends and attitudes in an unusual association, framed in a strong social history framework.
The title of the exhibition refers to the organisation of the material on display: the various historical and contemporary works of art are linked together along thematic threads in subtly interwoven networks, forming a complex structure reminiscent of the logic of a jigsaw puzzle. The exhibition explores stories of tragedies, stumbling blocks and upheavals, approaching them in a variety of registers, sometimes ironic, sometimes poignant. Through the works, which enter into dialogue with each other and sometimes overlap, an intellectual and emotional space unfolds in which compassion and the possibility of resolution open up.
