Based on material from the Selmeczi private collection, the exhibition entitled “The Mikházi Mystery” recalls an event in 1980 that can be considered one of the defining moments of the early MAMŰ movement: a village school classroom provided the venue for the first major community presentation by a generation of young artists from Marosvásárhely.
The works and documents on display not only bring to life the experimental spirit of the time—that is, self-organized activity that escaped the control of an overregulated cultural public sphere—but also shed light on how the peripheral space created an alternative art institution in opposition to official structures.
By reconstructing works preserved in several private collections and rarely accessible documents, the selection makes the early face of MAMŰ’s alternative artistic public sphere visible once again.
