Péter Gémes’s Diary series has so far been produced in four formats: Diary – Pyramid, Diary – Net, Diary – Hourglass, and Diary – One Week.
This is the first time that the thirty pages of Diary – One Month, now presented, can be seen together in this way, 18 metres long, because although Gémes had intended such a linear arrangement, it has never been achieved in his lifetime or until now.
Among the various sizes of enlargements in the bequest, this important group of works had already come to the attention of the curators of this exhibition at MissionArt Gallery in 2011, but only now was the time right to present these sheets of earthly dimensions but unearthly beauty in this form.
The literature of Péter Gémes’ oeuvre is quite rich, and many of the writings within it deal with the various realized ensembles of the Diary series. We know that the pages of the Diary series were enlarged in different sizes, in addition to the smaller ones, two copies of the Hourglass, the Net and the Pyramid in 40×60 cm, and these were presented several times in several places.
The 30-page series Diary – One Month, which is now on show, is, unlike the previous series, only one copy and has never been shown in this linear arrangement before. The complete series of Diary – A Month can only be purchased as a single copy, but the individual pages of Diary – A Day I – X can also be acquired separately for private collections.
