The exhibition “Printing in Progress”, to be held in the Barcsay Hall of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, aims to present a comprehensive picture of the transformation and genre diversity of contemporary Hungarian graphic art over the past four decades. The subtitle “Contemporary Hungarian Printmaking in Plane and Space” refers to the change in scale when printmaking moves from the two-dimensional plane surface of paper to space, and, taking advantage of the possibilities of the genre, transforms into spatial graphics and installations. The exhibition presents nearly fifty works selected from the Library, Archives and Art Collection of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts (including József Gaál, Gyöngyi Gallusz, Endre Koronczi, Dóra Maurer, József Szurcsik), as well as the most outstanding diploma works of recent years.
The selection is both a tribute to Hungarian graphic traditions and a look ahead to the future: it emphasises the continuity of artistic processes, showing that graphic art is still a living and constantly evolving art form.
While confidently employing traditional, relief, intaglio and planographic printing techniques, the artists at the beginning of their careers also experiment with different tools and practices of contemporary art, such as Laura Czuczor and Kelemen Miklós, Rector’s Special Prize winners, or Bíborka Gacsályi, Best of Diploma Prize winner, who places puzzle-figure prints in space.
The exhibition emphasises not only the diversity of the genre, but also the continuity of artistic processes, showing that graphic art is still a living and dynamically evolving art form. Visitors will gain an insight into a wide range of styles and techniques, from printmaking to digital technology, and discover fresh, original visions of young talent.
