“I am a young Christian creative woman from Central and Eastern Europe.” All the points of Éva Boglárka Zellei’s self-definition are worth unpacking and interpreting, individually and in all their permutations. In fact, interpretation is not only a possibility, but also a question of existence far beyond the personal history of the artist.
For years, Zelle’s works, photographs, performative actions and installations have been following this process of searching for meaning, of self-placement. In her current exhibition, Attempts at inheriting, these experiments explore the question of cultural heritage, or more precisely inheritance, its relation to the personal and communal present, its spiritual, social, communal, historical and ethical aspects. In Zellei’s practice, performance and image-making are possibilities: in their acts, this time, a tradition that has been worn out and outdated in its former contextuality can be reinterpreted and given contemporary meaning.
