Since the beginning of the Budapest Photo Festival, Hungarian photographers have been given a prominent role, inviting them to a common reflection and discussion on a specific theme every year. The mapping of the present of classical art genres has been carried out in recent years along several themes. Taking this a step further, in 2025 the focus will be on the issue of artificial intelligence, which (also) affects the field of photography and poses new challenges. The exhibition Real and Artificial Identities explores the possibilities and interfaces between photography and AI within the field of portraiture, one of the most classic genres, and presents the attitude and practice of Hungarian artists towards the subject. Our relationship to portraiture and human representation as photographers and recipients is constantly changing, and the emergence of artificial intelligence in the imaging process marks the beginning of a new era. The works on display at the Kiscelli Museum show the differences, possibilities and positions that dominate the combination of a century and a half of photographic tradition and the latest technology.
