Julius Koller (1939-2007) was one of the cult figures of the post-war avant-garde, who created his oeuvre on the margins of communist Czechoslovakia, far from the official art scene. Since the 1990s, his art has had a significant international impact, particularly in the field of conceptual art.
His first exhibition in Hungary will take place in the Plus space at acb and is based around the motif of the sine curve line, which for Koller symbolised resistance to the socialist imperative of unity and the ebb and flow of communication, ancient knowledge and human experience.
The exhibition presents works from five decades in an associative arrangement, organised around recurring motifs – question marks, ping-pong, Möbius strip, UFOs, etc. – and explores Koller’s commitment to critique official culture through various media (drawing, painting, photography, object, print), emphasising the importance of imagination and active dialogue.
