The Open Structures Art Association (OSAS) made its debut in 2006 with its first exhibition at the Vasarely Museum. Since its inception, it has organized three to five themed international exhibitions each year—featuring constructive, concrete, and progressive art—with the participation of both established and emerging artists. To date, it has organized more than fifty exhibitions, involving a total of more than seven hundred artists.
The idea of founding the association had come up in conversations among friends years earlier, but it was not until 2005 that OSAS was formally established and the official procedures were initiated; and the association was registered in 2006. The founding artists, alongside Dóra Maurer, were Tibor Gáyor, István Harasztÿ, Katalin Hetey, Tamás Konok, Vera Molnár, and István Nádler, who first invited Judit Nemes to join; later, the membership expanded to include additional artists from Hungary and abroad.
All founding and current artist members, as well as honorary members, are participating in the “20 YEARS OF OSAS” exhibition, presenting a selection of old and new works by a total of thirty-three artists. The exhibition also aims to highlight how Dóra Maurer’s dedicated involvement in OSAS’s work has exerted a force that not only had a profound impact on the intellectual and aesthetic quality of the programs but also on the association itself—in that the association was part of Maurer’s creative practice, functioning as a living work of art and continuing to do so.
