This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the birth of József László Bíró. It was his career as a journalist that led him to his main invention, the ballpoint pen. As an editor, he was so annoyed by the cumbersome nature of fountain pens that he began to think about inventing a new writing instrument. From the 1960s onwards, the ballpoint pen became a commonly used writing instrument in every country on earth.

For communicating ideas, ballpoint pens are still in use today, alongside computers for handwriting. In Argentina, László Bíró is so highly respected that the Argentine Inventors’ Day is celebrated on his birthday, 29 September.

TypoSalon would like to pay tribute to the genius of József László Bíró by presenting an exhibition of works created especially for the occasion, using the modern tools of typography.

The exhibition will be presented in the MET Gallery of the Hungarian Electrographic Society, so we have asked for computer-generated works, or digital reworking of any works drawn with ballpoint pen, taking into account typographic aspects.
