Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is a web term that refers to the shift of content as web pages load, and is explicitly considered by Google as a negative technical phenomenon to be avoided. However, I really like the term when applied to painting.

Painting is, after all, a still image par excellence, yet it is full of ‘shifts’, ‘jumps’. And this shifting and jumping is not a negative phenomenon, unlike with websites, but almost the essence of painting.

The Layout Shift of paintings is essentially ‘played out’ in the viewer’s brain, through perception.
