150 years ago, the leading public figures of Székesfehérvár and Fejér County believed that the future of a city, its cultural and public life, could be built on the strong local patriotism of its citizens, the strength of the community and the unity of its people.
City politicians, noblemen of the county, members of the church, distinguished citizens, public, educational and cultural figures – one hundred and thirty-seven of them – decided to send a clear message to the present and the future of the city: they founded the predecessor of the King St. Stephen Museum, the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fejérvár County and Székesfejérvár.
The museum project of 150 years ago was not only the work of 137 exceptional citizens with a vision, but also the commitment of the whole town to the future development of the city.
Celebrating 150 years of the museum today: a resolution. Bringing our intellectual, scientific and cultural heritage alive is a responsibility and a faith that the next 150 years of museum development will continue unabated.
The main aim of our exhibition is to present the history of the institution through museum work and museum thinking. Through objects, events, important personalities and reflections on the museum’s collections, we will recall shared memories, both personal and individual.
Let us tell you who we are, what makes us different from another museum, what are the stories that could only happen in the Székesfehérvár museum. Focusing on the museum’s key researchers, staff, donors, collections and the micro-history of its artefacts, the exhibition looks back at the achievements that have established the institution’s national and international reputation.
The exhibition will be held at the István Csók Gallery.
