Each exhibition leaves marks on the walls of the space. Nails, screws and dowels get inserted into the wall at the fixing points of the artworks. When removed, a hole is left, which is filled up later with plaster, replacing the original material of the wall bit by bit. These and similar processes take place in the deeper layers of the walls, which in most cases remain hidden from visitors of the show. But the resulting cavities and repairs can provide valuable information about past exhibitions.
We are pursuing research that focuses on unexplored depths, in opposition to perception limited to surfaces. We are using detectors and various non-invasive sampling techniques to scan the walls of the exhibition space – in effect, searching for artefacts left behind in the walls of the exhibition space. We emphasize the mapping process, so the instrument becomes the focus, which is constantly scanning the ‘blank’ wall. Our aim is to implement a complete survey of the exhibition space’s walls, collecting and organizing data. Visitors can get an insight into the work in two stages: firstly, the exploration process and then the reconstruction, when the space is being returned to its original functional state. Our work only remains in the form of the documentation presented at the latter event.
