In Gábor Erdélyi’s paintings, the viewer’s gaze does not always find the focal point of the pictorial narrative where one would expect it at first glance. Alongside the restrained, homogeneous main surfaces, it is above all the edges that take on significance. For him, the edge is not merely a boundary line, but a distinct area within the pictorial object: it is where the main surface meets the side, while the layering of the paint, its color, and its material presence transform this space into an independent formation.

In his earlier edge paintings, the richness of color was concentrated primarily on the edge, while the gray main surface both restrained and simultaneously highlighted this intensity. In his current works, this arrangement has shifted: the main surface also takes on an active color and enters into direct dialogue with the color world of the edge. It is not a new painterly problem that emerges, but rather a previous question that takes on a different emphasis.

The title “Another Place” refers to this change. It does not denote a different location, but rather a situation that arises from the new arrangement of the painting’s elements. The motif does not simply occupy a predetermined space: its very presence shapes it. The exhibition thus does not promise a new spectacle, but rather a different arrangement of the same image.
