The exhibition titled Like You and Me presents the themes, technical experiments, genre specificities and various crossings of the boundaries of the medium of contemporary Hungarian photography through nearly 100 works by 30 young photographers. The exhibition at the Mai Manó House aims to present the individual voices of a generation through the personal, epochal experiences of a generation.
The exhibition explores the coherence of the experiences of individuals born in the particular political climate of the post-1980 era, who experienced the digital boom at first hand and used its products at a skill level. Can these experiences unconsciously seep into the work of photographers?
For the loosely connected individuals of postmodern society, the possibility of crossing over between tradition and the latest styles is natural, they are positively attached to fashion and social media, and their attachments are less and less political or instruments of resistance. Can there be common intersections between different perceptions and methods, can there be lessons to be learnt, is there a great Collective Generational Experience?
The choice of the title As You and Me symbolises the independence of the individual and the expression of personal identity, referring to the intimate self, our body, its extended boundaries. It signifies separateness and social solitude, but it also signifies community, whether virtual or real, and belonging.
The exhibition can only present a small slice of the rich oeuvre that characterizes contemporary Hungarian photography, but it can still be an invaluable visual source and vision of an era of photography for those of us who live in it. It is about you, me and us.
