In his project, ongoing since 2007, Daniel Sipos has been working with women
who professionally practice some form of public self-representation,
yielding their body, talent and expertise to the public eye.
His photographic subjects include a contemporary dancer, an ex sex model, a
striptease dancer, a stylist, a fashion model and a singer. The photographs
in each series display the role bestowed on them by their profession, as
well as its requisites and attributes.
What happens if the photographer extracts women who exist as objects of
visual pleasure for men from their customary work environment and intrudes
upon their private lives? Is it possible, if only for a split second, to
grasp something beyond this false identity, underneath the perfect surface?
Is it possible to take photographs in which these models shed their second
skin imparted to them by the ‘male gaze’ and appear in the ‘nudity’ of their
own intimate being?
