“Things Made by Telling” is a group of exhibitions in four different venues, created jointly by the students of the MKE Doctoral School.

The title of each exhibition refers to the most fundamental dilemma of doctoral education: the seemingly irresolvable contradiction between the scientific and the artistic approach, i.e. the problem of the relationship between linguistic (textual) and optical (visual) representation.

To explore this concept in more depth, to think about it further and to elaborate it through artistic means, four different ideas have been developed, presented in different spaces and at different times.

The different units are organised around the parallels to be found in the creative practices of the artists belonging to each group, and the context of the themes they explore.

The narrative of the present exhibition is constructed from a combination of photographs that obscure their motifs, elusive objects, collage-like surfaces, images and videos of mysterious events or non-events.

The works on display in the Glassyard Gallery are intrinsically linked to the artist’s doctoral research, but are taken out of their ‘original’ context and, through their openness to interpretation, are given new and fresh readings.

These previously ‘hidden’ meanings illustrate the multiple interpretability of works of art. A common feature of the works on show is that they focus mainly on social and environmental phenomena, often in a self-reflexive way, and in a sensitive, personal and humorous way.

Despite their formal constraints, the works of art contain the possibility of free association, thus evoking the performative, open character of live speech.
