Monstrous Women

04. May 2022. – 17. May
MegnyitóOpening: May 3, 2022, 7:00 pm

For her solo show opening in the gallery space of SYAA, Anita Kroo is presenting her drawings, prints and paintings created during the past year. Inspired by the chapter titled Monstrous Women from Catherine McCormack’s Women in The Picture, Women, Art And the Power of Looking , in her most recent series of work the artist is shedding light on the controversial and historically loaded definition of femininity. In her mixed media work Anita Kroo portrays what our society dismisses or subjugates and questions the socially legitimized representations of sexuality and motherhood. Drawing on contemporary feminist theory, ancient matriarchal cultures and mythologies, her work focuses on the female perspective through a social and cultural context.

Anita Kroo started her Doctorate in Fine Arts studies at the University of East London in 2020. In her artwork and research she creates a counter iconography for archetypes of femininity and motherhood. As part of her solo exhibition titled Monstrous Women she will be participating in a collaborative workshop with the feminist collective School of Disobedience, hosted in the gallery space of SYAA.
