Trafó Galéria is hosting the first solo exhibition of the Czech artist Jakub Hošek (1979) in Hungary. Hošek is one of the most unique and intriguing figures of the emerging art scene of Prague, as he is considered a „total artist”, being a painter and a music promoter and producer at the same time. Throughout the past few years he has been superficially labelled as proto-hipster, goth and anarchist but none of the words successfully describe his artistic activities.

Hošek graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague as a student of the painting class Vladimir Skrepl and Jirí Kovanda. Since 2005 he was nominated twice for the most important Czech art prize Jindřich Chalupecky Award and he won Strabag Art Award International in 2011. His last big scale solo exhibition was held in FAIT Gallery, Brno.

One of the signature features of Hošek’s paintings is his very expressive calligraphic style that evolves almost into abstraction, and which at some points is clearly inspired by music typography. The linear painting style of the artist is gravitating around different graphic technics, and has a very peculiar connection with texts, which often conceal self-mythological allusions. Hošek’s new paintings are box-like, he is using them as three dimensional objects. The exhibition beside his new works will also present a small selection of his earlier cycles.
