Just as Orson Welles adapted H. G. Wells’s 1898 novel *The War of the Worlds* to his own era and its media landscape — creating his now–legendary radio broadcast that portrayed an alien invasion through realistic news reports, which caused mass panic among the American public on the eve of World War II — so too has Péter Lichter adapted his own work to the era of “post–truth,” an era of AI-generated hyperrealistic images and videos, intensifying global conflicts, and political crises.
Similar to Lichter’s earlier experimental films — such as *Baroque Femina*, based on a book by Márió Z. Nemes, or his most recent “abstract” Dracula film, *The Thing in the Coffin* — *War of the Worlds* is also a found-footage film based on an adaptation, which, while retaining the radio broadcast’s complete audio, is constructed from black-and-white elements of AI videos, contemporary war footage, documentary footage, and feature films — and presented in the FKSE basement bunker, pushed to the very limits of abstraction.
