The idea of making a photo series to document the cellar houses lining the Avas hill in the city of Miskolc came while shooting the documentary Tincity. The film was shot between 2006 and 2008, during which period we spent a lot of time on Avas, and made a great number of acquaintances and friends.
After the film had premiered, we began to miss the familiar community and thought it would be a good idea to work together some more on a photo project. We are planning to compile a book from the photographs, with a DVD insert containing the documentary, giving a comprehensive insight into the unique world of the historic Avas hills.
The Tincity Photo Project exhibition is a selection of this corpus of documentation, which is based on a thematic concept harmonizing format with content. Portraits, exteriors and interiors were shot in medium format for detail and resolution. Moods and genres were shot in Leica format. Besides still and cinematic documentation, the planned book will contain fragments of interviews (made for the film but left out during editing) as well as unique drawings and maps represented in a personal, diary-like visual form.
Owing to the “lyrical” nature of the documentary Tincity, no “traditional” interviews were made (recorded with a camera); we only used a voice recorder to document the personal stories, preserving the intimacy of the situations with this method.
The edited version of this corpus of voice recordings had given the basis of the film, for which we then set out to shoot images throughout four seasons on the Avas. Thus, the film and the portraits in the photo series mutually complement each other.
During the TinCity Photo Project exhibition, the film will be screened twice at the Lumen Gallery:
