PostContemporary

The conception of the show is made by László Beke, who is dealing with the PostContemporary (PoCo) conditions since two years.

“The PostContemporary is not simply a new art course, but rather a situation, a condition, how Jean-François Lyotard puts it in his famous book about Postmodern Condition. If we consider the developments of the arts, we can easily reconstruct, that we talk about contemporary since 25 years.

It is doubtful, whether it is and it will be the same condition in another 25 years. We would like to bring something new – whatever this adjectives should mean. We don’t attack contemporary art, but we want to go beyond it.

PostContemporary leans on the elements of contemporary, also on postmodern. It also has to deal with the heritage of postcommunism and postsocialism (not to mention neo-marxism).”

The exhibition does not claim to define PostContemporary. This trial would be anyway paradoxical, as PostContemporary’s substantial element is the resistance against the theorization, which roots in the attempt to avoid its contamination with modernist and post-modernist past idioms.

The exhibition is a “nomansland”, which operates with the PoCo attitude and invites new interventions also in its format.
